BROOKLYN, NY – Rutgers-Newark won all five singles matches that it contested to notch a 6-3 win over Brooklyn College despite carrying only five players to the match.

The Scarlet Raiders (1-5) got singles wins from freshmen Ashley Lawrence and Lia Salierno,  junior Kelly Fitzsimmons, and sophomores and Mercedes Kuilan and Wanze Li to offset forfeits at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles. Fitzsimmons and Kuilan teamed for an 8-1 win on the No. 2 doubles court.

Fitzsimmons won a super tie-breaker third set, 10-8, in the only match to go an extra frame.

The Raiders take on Baruch College at the U.S. Tennis Center in Flushing, Queens, on Saturday at 5 p.m.
