Pioneers Stop Rutgers-Newark In NJAC Play

WAYNE, NJ – Rutgers-Newark, coming off of an upset of No. 3 nationally-ranked Stevens on Tuesday, fell, 6-1, to William Paterson in a New Jersey Athletic Conference match in WPU Soccer Park.

Junior midfielder Ronald Quiroz, who put all four of his attempts on goal, posted the Scarlet Raiders' lone goal in the 53rd minute on a feed from junior defender Bryan Boyer to trim the lead to 4-1.

The Pioneers (12-3-2, NJAC 5-2-1) got the first goal on a Raider own goal just 64 seconds into the contest off of a WPU corner kick which was knocked in by a Rutgers-Newark defender. Just 2:48 later, freshman forward Kene Eze scored what proved to be the game winner off of an assist from freshman forward Mike Lowe.

Rutgers-Newark never got the chance to recover as sophomore forward Naeem Boucher notched a goal and an assist as the Pioneers tacked on two more first-half markers.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jonathan Frances (4-6-1) allowed four goals on just seven Pioneer shots in the opening period while WPU junior Zach Collins needed to make just two saves on four Rutgers-Newark shots. Collins finished with six saves.

Senior goalkeeper Matt Zielyk made five saves in the second half while allowing two goals. In the 72nd minute, a corner kick by junior forward Anthony Ferrer was deflected by a Raider defender into the goal. Senior forward Julian Valerio scored his second goal of the contest on a cross from freshman midfielder Matt Nigro to cap the scoring in the 85th minute.

Valerio scored on a cross from deep on the left side by Boucher in the 36th minute before Boucher sent in a goal under just under the crossbar off of an assist from Dan Fulmer.

Rutgers-Newark (10-7-1, NJAC 1-6-1) hosts Richard Stockton at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in the final NJAC regular season match.

The Raiders have added a non-conference match on Alumni Field against Berkeley College for Wednesday, November 3, when Rutgers-Newark will celebrate Senior Night.
