In the opener, the Pioneers (25-14-1, NJAC 10-6) pushed across eight runs on seven hits and two walks in the first inning against losing pitcher
Angela Riscinti (8-12).
The Scarlet Raiders (11-25, NJAC 1-15) scored both of their runs in the fourth inning on a single by junior second baseman
Emily Ibarra, a sacrifice bunt by senior leftfielder
Amber Affholter, a single by rookie catcher
Monica Liotto, an RBI single by freshman first baseman
Monica Bagan and a wild pitch.
But that was all the Raiders could register against winning pitcher Michele Graham (14-9) who struck out seven, walked no one and allowed just five singles in the five-inning contest.
Freshman right fielder
Nicole Odell singled with two outs in the second and Zelaya singled through the right side in the fifth for the other Rutgers-Newark hits.
In the nightcap, Zelaya had two singles, but WPU pitcher Jaclyn Masterson posted a five-hit shutout while striking out three and walking no one in five innings.
Zelaya led off the game with a single through the right side and added a base hit through the middle in the fifth.
Rutgers-Newark loaded the bases in the fourth, but could not get a run across. Liotto, who played third base in the second game, single to right field with one out but was erased on a fielder's choice ground off the of the bat of Bagan. Odell then singled to centerfield before sophomore shortstop
Tina Aita drew a walk to fill the bases. But Masterson snared a line drive back through the middle by junior leftfielder
Ashley Angeli to quell the uprising.
Affholter, who caught the second game, singled in the first inning for the other Raider hit.
The Pioneers scored in every inning except the third, collecting three runs in the top of the fifth to run the total to eight.
Rutgers-Newark hosts Kean in 1 p.m. on Saturday on Alumni Field in a season-ending NJAC doubleheader. Seniors Affholter and
Jackie Guas – who will be playing their final games in Scarlet & Black – will be honored between games.
