NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers-Newark freshman pitcher
Angela Riscinti allowed only an unearned run in the top of the seventh as Kean University slipped past the Scarlet Raiders for a New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep, 1-0 and 9-1, on Senior Day on Alumni Field.
Kean 1, Rutgers-Newark 0
Kean 9, Rutgers-Newark 1
In the opener, Riscinti (8-13) scattered seven hits while striking out four and walking just one, but the only run of the game reached base on a fielding error to start the seventh and scored on a sacrifice fly to make a winner of Cougar pitcher Cassie Shotwell. Shotwell struck out five and walked no one while allowing just four hits.
Freshman rightfielder
Quiana Gleaves and rookie leftfielder Nicole Odell collected singles in the third inning while freshman first baseman
Monica Bagan and sophomore shortstop
Tina Aita got base hits in the fourth. But the Raiders could squeeze a run out of those two chances.
In the nightcap, Bagan hammered her second home run of the season over the centerfield fence, but Kean pitcher Courtney Smyth allowed just one other Raider hit – a fifth-inning single through the left side by losing pitcher
Samantha Veneziano.
The Cougars (25-14, NJAC 9-9) had 11 hits and took advantage of five Raider errors to score five unearned runs.
Rutgers-Newark caps the season with an overall mark of 11-27 and an NJAC record of 1-17.
