Raiders Smother Farmingdale In Season Opener

Rutgers-Newark Men's Soccer

Innocent Buule
NEWARK, NJ – Senior forward Innocent Buule scored goals less than two minutes apart in the first half as Rutgers-Newark shutdown Farmingdale State, 5-1, in the season opening match for each squad on Alumni Field.

BOX SCORE & PLAY-BY-PLAY

Buule wrapped goals around the Rams' lone goal by senior midfielder Alex Mendolia to give the Scarlet Raiders (1-0-0) a 3-1 halftime edge.

Rutgers-Newark dominated play, getting off 22 shots to Farmingdale's five and forcing junior goalkeeper Ricky Meschkow to make six saves. Sophomore keeper Jonathan Frances needed just one save to post the win as he returned to the Raider lineup for the first time since 2007.

Junior midfielder Ronald Quiroz headed in a lead lob pass into the box off the foot of junior defender Kofi Agyemang in the eighth minute to post Rutgers-Newark's first tally of 2010.

Buule chipped a ball over a defender then lobbed a shot over a charging Meschkow in the 18th minute to make it 2-0 before ending the first half scoring by putting away a lead feed into the right side of the box by sophomore midfielder Brian Barrera in the 20th minute.

Junior forward Richie Villamar drilled a penalty kick on the ground just inside the right post in the 51st minute and senior midfielder Matt Tatro hammered in a 20-yard blast in the 73rd minute to account for the only goals of the second half.

The Raiders play host North Carolina Wesleyan at noon on Saturday in the opening game of the Roger Taylor Fall Classic in Rocky Mount before facing Randolph College on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
