Strong Second Half Lifts Raiders Past St. Joseph's LI

NEWARK, NJ – Junior forward Robert Campos netted two goals while senior forward Innocent Buule had a hand in all three Rutgers-Newark tallies in a 3-1 win over St. Joseph's LI on Alumni Field.

The Scarlet Raiders (6-1-0) extended their winning streak to five matches by scoring two goals in the second period to subdue a game Golden Eagles squad. Rutgers-Newark piled up a 29-11 edge in shots but St. Joseph's carried a tie into the 67th minute.

Campos finished a beautiful sequence in the 18th minute for the match's first score. Sophomore midfielder Brian Barrera sent a chip shot over defenders on the right side from just beyond midfield which Buule race onto about 40 yards out. He dribbled down right side, lifting a cross from about 20 yards out on the right to Campos who was slicing into the middle of the box.

St. Joseph's (3-3-0) evened things up at 37:37 when senior forward Stephan Zaech hammered a shot that bounced in off the left post on a crossing pass from the right by senior defender K.J. LaBarbera.

The Raiders dominated the midfield in the second half, allowing the Golden Eagles just five shots while wearing down St. Joseph's defense.

Junior midfielder Ronald Quiroz struck a crisp cross from the right side to Buule on the right side of the box to set up Buule's game-winning goal in at 66:37.

Buule finished a breakaway run by putting a shot off of the cross bar from the left side which Campos headed into an empty right side at 80:59 to provide an insurance goal.

Playing behind a defense bolstered by senior Christien Vlahinich, junior Bernardo Valle and sophomore Nick Kyprianou, sophomore goalkeeper Jonathan Frances raced out several times to stem possible opportunities for the Golden Eagles. He ran his personal record to 4-1-0 with four saves.

Rutgers-Newark begins New Jersey Athletic Conference play on Saturday at Rutgers-Camden, taking on the Scarlet Raptors at 7 p.m.
