Strong First Half Carries Raiders Past Rutgers-Camden, 56-38

CAMDEN, NJ – Rutgers-Newark rolled to a 26-8 halftime lead behind balanced scoring and pressure defense on its way to a 56-38 New Jersey Athletic Conference win over Rutgers-Camden.

Senior forward Jaleesa Coleman netted six of her 10 points while junior guard Jared Tactuk, sophomore guard Kristen Venning and freshman guard ShaQuanna Marshall scored five points apiece as the Scarlet Raiders (11-2, NJAC 3-1) took advantage of 23 first-half turnovers by the Scarlet Raptors (5-8, NJAC 0-4) who made just three field goals before intermission.

Coleman also had five rebounds and two blocked shots for the Raiders who bounced back from their first NJAC loss of the season at the hands of William Paterson on Wednesday. Junior guard Brittany Smith had an outstanding floor game with six rebounds, five points as well as game highs of five assists and five steals.

Freshman forward Jasmine Daniels made six of nine shots from the floor for a game-high 12 points to go along with three steals and three rebounds while Tactuk finished with nine points and three steals. Venning tallied seven points, five rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot while Marshall hit two of four shots from beyond the arc to total eight points.

Junior guard Brittany Turner paced the Raptors with 11 points and five rebounds while junior forward Cynthia Williams pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds to help Rutgers-Camden dominate the boards, 41-28. Sophomore forward Alyce Milakovic added nine points, five rebounds and two steals for the Raptors who turned the ball over 30 times in the loss.

The 38 points allowed tied the second lowest total of the season by Rutgers-Newark and was just two points more than the number allowed in a 72-36 win over York NY on December 10.

The Rutgers-Newark women visit John Jay at 5 p.m. on Monday for a non-conference game. On Wednesday, the Raiders host an NJAC doubleheader against NJAC foe Ramapo College. The women tip off at 6 p.m. in The Golden Dome with the men to follow at 8 o'clock.
