Rutgers-Newark Falls To Stevens In Non-Conference Doubleheader

NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers-Newark freshman Gabby Spinella doubled in each game of a doubleheader loss to Stevens. The Ducks allowed just eight hits in winning 12-2 and 11-3.

Stevens freshman Kayla Berardi (6-1) and sophomore Molly Herforth (2-5) each hurled four-hitters while the Ducks piled up 29 hits in the twinbill.

In the opener, Spinella doubled and scored twice for the Raiders. Senior centerfielder Jessica Zelaya, freshman catcher AJ Affholter and rookie rightfielder Tori Santiago notched singles against Berardi who struck out seven and walked no one in the five-inning decision.

Spinella double down the rightfield line, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball in the second inning to make it 2-1.

In the fourth, Spinella reached on an error and scored following a two-out single by Affholter.

In the nightcap, Spinella ripped her fifth double of the season against Herforth who walked five and struck out two. Sophomore leftfielder Nicole Odell also doubled and sophomore catcher Monica Liotto and senior third baseman Ashley Angeli singled for the Raiders.

Spinella had an RBI double in the fifth inning to start a two-run rally.

Odell led off the sixth with a double and scored on a two-out single to left by Liotto.

Rutgers-Newark visits Old Westbury on Thursday at 4 p.m. for a non-conference doubleheader before beginning New Jersey Athletic Conference play at The College of New Jersey on Saturday.
