RUTGERS-NEWARK MEN'S VOLLEYBALL

Austin Pappas
NEW YORK – Rutgers-Newark junior opposite Austin Pappas had match highs of 20 kills and 23.5 points, but NYU subdued the injury riddled Scarlet Raiders, 3-1, in the Coles Sports Center.

BOX SCORE & PLAY-BY-PLAY

The Scarlet Raiders (15-11), who played without junior opposite Kenneth de Groh for a second straight match, lost their third straight while the Violets (19-8) made up for their 3-0 loss to the Raiders in Newark on January 29.

Pappas hit .424 while notching a pair of aces, four digs and three assisted blocks while senior middle hitter Grant Metheny piled up 17 kills, but the duo were the only Rutgers-Newark players to reach double digits in points.

Junior outside hitter Marcin Midura contributed seven kills, two aces and tied junior libero Zack Chambers with a team-high seven digs. Senior setter Jeff Zornig had 35 assists and five digs while senior Liran Shapiro registered 11 assists and an ace.

Outside hitters Taylor Fauntleroy and Patrick Dodd paced NYU with 11 kills apiece while New Jersey native Fran Hodgson hit .533 with 10 kills. Freshman setter Connor Mortland had 38 assists and six digs as the Violets hit a crisp .316 for the night.

In game one, junior opposite Luke Hamlet had a kill followed by a Dodd block as NYU snapped a 19-19 tie to take the lead for good in a tight opening frame. Fauntleroy ended the game with a kill.

In game two, Midura had back-to-back service aces in the middle of a 5-0 spurt which staked Rutgers-Newark to a 20-14 edge as the Raiders evened the match.

But NYU's depth proved to be the difference as the Violets committed just seven attack errors over the final two games while the Raiders misfired 16 times. NYU dominated the net, collecting 11 blocks to the Raiders' four.

Rutgers-Newark visits neighboring NJIT on Friday at 7 p.m. in its final regular season match before beginning to gear up for the EIVA Championship Tournament opening round on April 23. The fourth-seeded Raiders host fifth-seeded Saint Francis at 7 p.m. in The Golden Dome.
