Rutgers-Newark Falls In EIVA Tait Regular Season Final At Springfield

NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers-Newark senior setter Jeff Zornig had 36 assists and 12.0 points, but Springfield College hit a torrid .462 as a team in a 3-1 EIVA Tait match in Blake Arena. Game scores were 25-21, 22-25, 25-21, 25-18.

The Scarlet Raiders (15-10, EIVA Tait 4-6) were swept by the Pride (15-13, EIVA Tait 4-6) in league play, giving the hosts the third seed in the upcoming EIVA Championship Tournament while dropped Rutgers-Newark to fourth. Each team will host an opening round match on April 23. It was the final conference regular season match of each team.

Zornig had five kills with one error on eight attacks, delivered four service aces, posted a solo block and got in on three other blocks.

Senior middle hitter Grant Metheny and junior outside hitter Marcin Midura had 13 kills apiece. Metheny tallied a team-high 15.5 points by adding two aces and an assisted block while Midura hit .458 (13 kills, 2 errors, 24 attacks) with one assisted block.

Senior opposite Alberto Bravo paced Springfield with a match-high 21 kills while sophomore setter Mike Becker notched 47 assists and roped four aces.

Zornig had three aces and the Raiders hit .429 (8-2-14) in game two to level the match, but the Pride committed just 10 attack errors on the night. After hitting .455 (12-2-22) in game three with one error, Springfield made no attack errors to hit .652 (15-0-23) in the final game.

Rutgers-Newark closes out its regular season with non-conference matches at NYU on Tuesday and NJIT on Friday. Each match begins at 7 p.m.
