Scarlet Raiders Fall To Rutgers-Camden In Season Finale

NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers-Newark libero Paulina Walega and defensive specialist Beatrice Loiseau were honored during pre-match ceremonies on Senior Night, but Rutgers-Camden played the spoiler to locked up a New Jersey Athletic Conference playoff berth with a 3-0 win in The Golden Dome. Game scores were 25-18, 25-19, 25-15.

Walega notched a team-high 10 digs while adding an ace and Loiseau delivered one of the Raiders' six service aces.

The Raiders (8-16, NJAC 0-8) completed their season while the Scarlet Raptors (7-25, NJAC 3-5) claimed the sixth and final berth in the upcoming NJAC Championship Tournament. Rutgers-Camden will travel to either Montclair State or Kean on November 5 for the opening round.

Sophomore middle blocker Sharee Gordon paced Rutgers-Newark by hitting .500 with a team-high 10 kills and just one error on 18 attacks. Freshman outside hitter Adrianna Pagnotta hit .353 with eight kills and two errors on 17 swings to help the Raiders hit .181 as a team (29 kills, 14 errors, 83 attacks).

Rookie middle blocker Christina Maglione added four kills and a match-high three aces while getting in on a block for 7.5 points and freshman outside hitter Veronica Chau contributed six kills. Freshman setter Kathy Hormaza tallied 17 assists, seven digs and an ace while rookie setter Emilie Pulecio totaled eight assists and seven digs.

Sophomore middle hitter Olivia Rowland pounded down a dozen kills on 14 swings with just one error to hit a sizzling .786. She also got in on all four of the Raptors' blocks to post a match-high 15 points. Rutgers-Camden hit .310 (36-9-87) as a team behind the setting of junior Michelle Dixon who distributed 19 assists.

Freshman outside hitter Courtnee Wilkerson added eight kills while sophomore Brooke Hassan and freshmen Cari Applegate, Melanie Kaiser and Nancy Brown roped two aces apiece to help the Raptors ring up 11 service points.

Rutgers-Camden never trailed in the contest.

Rutgers-Newark first-year head coach Jason Madsen has 11 freshmen and one sophomore eligible to return in 2014.
