Harvard Stops Scarlet Raiders In EIVA Play, 3-0

NEWARK, NJ – Harvard turned back Rutgers-Newark surges in games two and three to post a 3-0 EIVA win in The Golden Dome Arena.  Game scores were 25-15, 28-26, 25-18.

Sophomore outside hitter Manuel Felipez, who paced the Scarlet Raiders (2-6, NJAC 0-4) with 11 kills, notched five kills in game two when the home team hit .379 (16 kills, 5 errors, 29 attacks) only to fall to the Crimson (9-2, EIVA 5-1) 28-26.

Freshman outside hitter Branden Clemens helped Harvard hit a torrid .446 (42-9.74) by hammering down a match-high 12 kills with just two errors in 16 swings while junior middle blocker Will Chambers notched six kills in seven attacks without an error.  Sophomore middle blocker Caleb Zimmick and sophomore outside hitter D.J. White added eight kills apiece as the Crimson won for the sixth straight time overall and ran their EIVA victory streak to three.

Rutgers-Newark freshman outside hitter Colin Ferguson totaled eight kills and a solo block while classmate Travis Mintzer chipped in seven kills and a solo block as the Raiders hit .259 (38-17-81).

Clemens posted four kills without an error as the Crimson hit .458 to cruise to a first game win.

There were nine ties in the second frame when Clemens, Chambers and Zimmick posted four kills apiece to offset five putaways by Felipez.

With the Raiders leading 14-11 in the third set, a Rutgers-Newark service ace was followed by three consecutive aces by Clemens to change the tide. After a service error tied the game for the last time at 15-15, junior outside hitter Michael Owen and Clemens notched kills ahead of a block by White and Zimmick to put the Crimson up for good.

The Raiders suffered their fifth straight loss.

Rutgers-Newark host Penn State on Friday and Saint Francis on Saturday in a pair of EIVA contests in The Golden Dome.  The Friday match is at 7 p.m. and the Saturday contest begins at 2.
