CLAREMONT, CA – Rookies Ryan Macfarlane and Gerry Patrizio accounted for five of Rutgers-Newark's six hits in an 8-2 loss to Ithaca College in the Scarlet Raiders' spring break opener on Arce Field on the campus of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

Centerfielder Macfarlane went three for four with an RBI single in the seventh inning while second baseman Patrizio went two for two, scored both Raider runs, dropped down a sacrifice bunt and stole a base.

Junior first baseman Vin Troisi, who notched the other Rutgers-Newark base hit, delivered Patrizio with a sacrifice fly for the Raiders' first run in the third inning.  After Patrizio singled to rightfield and stole second base, Macfarlane also singled to right to set up the run.

Senior right-hander Kyle Van Vliet (0-2), who suffered his second straight loss, was rocked for four runs in the bottom of the first, allowing a single, two walks and back-to-back triples to dig a hole from which Rutgers-Newark could not escape.  He went seven full innings trailing 7-2 after allowing five earned runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out four.

Junior lefthander Ryan Staub closed out the game for the Raiders allowing an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth.

Second baseman Tim Henry and third baseman Colby Gee stroked the consecutive triples to spark the first inning outburst by the Bombers (6-4). Gee added an RBI double in the seventh as each junior finished with two RBI.

Sophomore right-hander John Prendergast (2-0) posted the complete-game victory for Ithaca, allowing six singles while striking out 10 and walking just one batter.

It was the second straight win following four consecutive losses for the Bombers in their sixth game of their West Coast spring break trip.

The teams square off on Memorial Field on the campus of Whittier College on Saturday at noon (PDT).
