Box Score
BALTIMORE, MD – Rutgers-Newark escaped the snow storm which enveloped New Jersey, but Johns Hopkins stopped the Scarlet Raiders, 12-3, on the JHU Baseball Diamond.
Senior first baseman Jeff Lynch helped key a trio of Blue Jay (4-0) outbursts while junior right-hander Tyler Goldstein (2-0) handcuffed the Scarlet Raiders (2-6) through the first five innings.
Goldstein struck out four while retiring the Raiders in order the first time through the lineup, but freshman centerfielder Ryan Macfarlane derailed his bid for a no-hitter and a shutout in the fourth. The junior left after five full innings after allowing only Macfarlane's single against no walks and seven strikeouts.
Macfarlane, who went three for four, led off the fourth with a single through the left side, stole second, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by freshman second baseman
Gerry Patrizio and scored on a ground ball to second base off the bat of junior rightfielder
Jimmy Napolitano to make it 3-1.
Lynch, junior rightfielder Mike Denlinger and senior catcher Ryan Zakszeski delivered consecutive two-out RBI doubles off of Raider senior starter
Kyle Van Vliet in the bottom of the first.
Meanwhile, Van Vliet was settling in to limit the Blue Jays to three singles over three innings before giving up a lead-off home run in the fifth to senior shortstop Kyle Neverman. That opened the flood gates to another three-run Johns Hopkins outburst and chased the Raider starter.
Following Neverman's homer, Lynch and Denlinger each singled and scored on infield errors to push the Blue Jay lead to 6-1. Junior right-hander
Michael Garcia replaced Van Vliet who gave up four earned runs on 10 hits while striking out four and walking one in 4-1/3 innings.
Lynch, who went five for five at the plate, singled and scored during a four-run rally in the sixth capped by a two-run double by Zakszeski and an RBI double by senior designated hitter Mike Kanen. Lynch capped his day with an RBI single in the seventh.
In the eighth, freshman leftfielder
Cameron Dias singled home Macfarlane and sophomore leftfielder
Eddie Spitaletta drew a bases-loaded walk to push across the final two Raider runs.
Johns Hopkins collected 18 hits while the Raiders were limited to five hits by a total of five Blue Jay hurlers.
Rutgers-Newark heads to California for next week to play eight games in 10 days before coming home for a non-conference away contest at Keystone on March 28.
