Box Score NEWARK, NJ – Junior midfielder
Cristina Estremera twice answered tying goals in the second half by Ramapo College to lift Rutgers University-Newark to a 3-2 New Jersey Athletic Conference victory on Alumni Field.
Estremera tallied the game winner with 5:36 remaining, heading a corner kick from the right side by freshman forward
Haley Savva into the left side of the goal from the left side of the box for her fifth goal of the season.
Estremera gave Raiders a 2-1 lead in the 61st minute when she ripped a hard shot through the hands of Ramapo freshman goalkeeper Jessica Cusick (1-1-0) from 25 yards out on the right side after a cross from the middle by freshman defender
Emily Corson.
Junior midfielder
Sara Corson gave the Raiders the early lead when she hammered a shot from 25 yards out on the right side off Cusick just 5:43 into the contest for her seventh goal of the season. The lead held up through the first half in the tightly contested battle.
Rutgers-Newark senior goalkeeper
Diana Aviles (5-0-0) equaled Cusick with three saves to get the win. Each keeper made two saves in the opening period when Ramapo built a 7-5 edge in shots. The Roadrunners finished with a 17-14 lead in shots but the Raiders took all four corner kicks attempted in the second half to construct a 6-2 advantage for the match.
Ramapo needed just 42 seconds to level the score in the second half when freshman forward Nani Vizcaino controlled the ball in a crowd in the right side of the box and sent a shot through traffic into the left side of the goal.
After Estremera's first marker, Vizcaino sent a ball from the left side to the top of the 18 where a collision left Aviles on the ground for junior midfielder Nicole Ninomiya to punch in the second equalizer of the contest in the 83rd minute. It was Ninomiya's seventh goal of the season.
The Raiders (6-4-1, NJAC 1-2-0) passed their win total of 2013 with nine matches remaining on their 2014 schedule while the Roadrunners (2-5-2, NJAC 1-2-0) dropped a league game after a 1-0 win over William Paterson on Saturday.
Rutgers-Newark hosts New Jersey City (3-4-2, NJAC 0-3-0) under the lights on Alumni Field on Saturday at 7:30.
