RUTGERS-NEWARK WOMEN'S SOCCER

Box Score

MADISON, N.J. – Junior midfielder Sara Corson headed in the golden goal in the 93rd minute as Rutgers University-Newark rallied from a self-inflicted 2-1 halftime deficit for a 3-2 win over Drew in a Nor'easter driven storm in Ranger Stadium.

Freshman forward Haley Savva sent a perfect cross from deep on the right side to Corson who was alone on the left side of the box to notch her 15th goal of the season and second of the match. It was Corson's school-record fifth game-winning goal of the season.

Rutgers-Newark (11-5-2, NJAC 3-3-1) set a new program record for wins in a season.  Bill Bustamante's Raiders eclipsed the 2004 team which posted a 10-7-1 mark under head coach Erik Burstein.

Junior midfielder Cristina Estremera ripped a free kick from 20 yards out on the right side through a crowd in the left side of the box into the net to even the score a 2-2 in the 67th minute.

Corson put the Raiders ahead on the first shot of the match.  Corson netted her 14th goal on a pass from sophomore forward Paige Lazar just 1:39 into the contest, but the Rangers gained a 2-1 edge at the half on a couple of Rutgers-Newark mistakes.

Drew junior midfielder Mel Santos collected a fumbled ball in the box and scored the leveling goal in the 23rd minute before a crossing pass by the Rangers went off two Raider defenders for an own goal 25 minutes into the fray.  Rutgers-Newark trailed at the break despite constructing a 6-3 edge in shots.

Estremera bounced a close-range shot off the right post and sent another shot just over the cross bar in the final minutes left in regulation as Rutgers-Newark dominated the second half.  The Raiders out-shot the Rangers, 10-3, while putting four shots on goal.  Drew did not have a shot on goal in the second 45 minutes.

Sophomore Victoria Benet and freshmen Emily Corson and Sabrina Solorzano spearheaded a Raider defense which bottled up the Ranger attack, limiting the home team to just six shots.

The Raiders now turn their attention to Saturday night's New Jersey Athletic Conference match against Rutgers-Camden under the lights of Alumni Field.  Not only will be it Senior Night, but an NJAC Championship Tournament berth could hang in the balance.  Rutgers-Newark can earn the first conference playoff berth in the history of the 15-year-old program with a win or a tie against the Scarlet Raptors (5-9-1, NJAC 2-5-0).  A Raider loss would leave a bid to the 6-team playoff in jeopardy entering the final Wednesday of the regular season.  Rutgers-Newark is at league-leading and nationally-ranked Montclair State (14-1-1, NJAC 7-0-1) next Wednesday.
