Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass. – A furious second-half rally by Rutgers University-Newark fell just short in the second round of the NCAA D-III Championship Tournament as Cortland State escaped Harwell-Rogers Field with a 2-1 victory.
The Scarlet Raiders (16-6-0) capped a landmark 2014 campaign by earning the first NCAA playoff win in program history with a 2-0 win over host Babson College on Saturday, but the Red Dragons thwarted Rutgers-Newark's attack over the final minutes to move on to the Sweet 16.

Chigozie Atubi sliced the Raider deficit to one in the 60
th minute when Rutgers-Newark countered a non-called collision in the Raider box. Atubi collected a loose ball in the box and fired a shot past Red Dragon senior goalkeeper Tim Beauvais to set the stage for a heart-stopping finish.
Rutgers-Newark rallied back in the second half after Cortland controlled first half play to build a 2-0 edge on a pair of goals by junior forward Ole Toepfer. Toepfer headed in the ice-breaker from the middle of the box in the in the 32
nd minute. He launched what proved to be the game winner off the outside of his foot in the 41
st minute for his 10
th marker of the season.

Matt Broomall made four saves for the Raiders while Beauvais registered three of his five stops in the second half when Rutgers-Newark turned up the pressure.

Hubert Dul was denied on Rutgers-Newark's best chance at a tie in the just 3:36 remaining. Dul ripped a shot toward the right side of the goal that Beauvais managed to snare to keep the Red Dragons in the lead.
Although Cortland constructed a 21-14 advantage in shots, the Raiders matched them with six shots on goal and each team attempted five corner kicks in the closely contested battle.

Charlie O'Connell put an attempt on target in the first half. Toepfer put four of his five shots on goal.

Kevin East's charges turned in their second straight NCAA at-large campaign with Araujo setting a new program record with 44 goals in just two seasons in Scarlet & Black.
Broomall, the 2014 New Jersey Athletic Conference Goalkeeper of the Year, will lead a strong nucleus of returning players in 2015, but Rutgers-Newark will be without senior All-NJAC performers Araujo,
Diego Moraes,
Edgar Abreu and
Pat Holliday.
