Jordan McDaniel went on a one-man 9-0 run late in the game as Rutgers University-Newark held off New Jersey City for a 62-46 New Jersey Athletic Conference win in the John J. Moore Center.
McDaniel, who finished with game highs of 18 points and nine rebounds, had three layups and three free throws from the 4-minute mark to 56 seconds remaining to move the Scarlet Raiders from an 8-point lead to a 61-44 advantage. He converted a conventional 3-point play in the final minute before sophomore guard
Darrian Collins connected on a free throw to push the visitors' lead to 18 with just 30 seconds left.
Senior swingman
Christian Garcia totaled 14 points, three rebounds and two steals for Rutgers-Newark while senior guards
Doze Ikwuegbu and
Chris Foreman each gunned in three 3-point jumpers. Ikwuegbu added five rebounds and two assists. Foreman was good on three of four shots from long range.
Senior forward Neville Joseph was the only New Jersey City player in double figures with a dozen points as the Gothic Knights hit just 32% of their field goal tries.
Rutgers-Newark dropped in 20 of 29 free throws to lead from wire-to-wire in its NJAC opener.
Garcia had three buckets and the Raiders poured in three treys during a 17-0 run which turned a 6-5 lead into a 23-5 bulge with 7:25 left in the opening period. Foreman started the spree with a 3-point jumper ahead of a layup and a jumper by Garcia. Ikwuegbu followed with back-to-back jumpers from beyond the arc before Garcia had a steal and a layup. But the Gothic Knights would score only two field goals during the remainder of the period as the Gothic Knights closed out with a 13-8 run. A 3-point jumper by Ikwuegbu with 4:28 left was the only field goal by the Raiders until Garcia hit a buzzer-beating layup to end the half with Rutgers-Newark in the lead 31-18.
Foreman wrapped a pair of 3-point jumpers around a layup by Garcia to account for an 8-0 spurt which put Rutgers-Newark ahead 41-22 with 14:16 left, but New Jersey City (2-3, NJAC 1-1) scrapped its way back into the game in the final six minutes.
Khalid Muhammad nailed a 3-point jumper with 5:31 left to draw the Gothic Knights to within eight points at 50-42. After a Garcia layup, a Jamall McDaniel jumper made it 52-44 with 4:28 remaining. Then the Raiders' McDaniel went on his decisive spree.
Rutgers-Newark (4-1, NJAC 1-0) breaks for Thanksgiving before visiting Stevens on Sunday at 2 p.m. for a non-conference game.
