Box Score
CLAREMONT, CA – Shortstop
Kevin Olah and rightfielder
Jimmy Napolitano combined for nine RBIs, five runs scored, three doubles and a home run for Rutgers University-Newark – but it wasn't enough.
Wesleyan University squeeze bunted the winning run across in the bottom of the ninth inning to cap a wild and wooly 13-12 decision on Pomona-Pitzer's baseball field as the Scarlet Raiders (1-5) could not hold onto a 10-5 lead.
Olah ripped an RBI double in the 6-run third inning and blasted a grand slam to right field in the fourth to stake the Raiders to the 5-run lead. He also singled and scored in the eighth to finish a triple shy of the cycle.
Napolitano doubled down the left field line and scored in the third, doubled in the sixth and homered with Olah aboard in the eighth to knot the score at 12-12.
Six Rutgers-Newark errors led to four unearned Cardinal runs in the slugfest which saw each team use four pitchers.
After Napolitano's blast tied the score, junior righthander
Andrew Nasti came on in relief in the bottom of the eighth. He escaped the inning despite issuing two walks.
Cardinal junior reliever Sam Elias hit sophomore leftfielder
Cameron Dias and freshman catcher
Josh Cote to put the Raiders in scoring position with one away in the top of the ninth, but sophomore second baseman
Gerry Patrizio lined into a double play to end the threat.
Nasti hit junior leftfielder Jonathan Dennett to lead off the bottom of the ninth before sophomore shortstop Guy Davidson bunted him to second. Dennett stole third before junior third baseman Ben Hoynes dropped down the game-winning bunt.
Senior first baseman
Vin Troisi went two for three for the Raiders with a 2-run single in the third and scored twice in the 4-hour marathon.
GAME TWO was suspended because of darkness following the 10th inning tied at 5-5. The game will be completed Sunday at noon prior to the previously scheduled contest between the teams on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps' field.
Down 5-0 entering the bottom of the seventh, the Raiders posted three runs on four hits in the bottom of the frame with a 2-run single by junior third baseman
Nick Gencarelli capping the spurt. Napolitano delivered a 2-run double in the eighth to knot the score and send the contest into extra innings.
