LOS ANGELES, CA – Rutgers University-Newark fell to Occidental in a doubleheader, 13-3 and 4-2, on Anderson Field.
IN THE NIGHTCAP, senior rightfielder
Jimmy Napolitano and junior third baseman
Nick Gencarelli slugged solo home runs in the second and fourth innings, respectively, to stake the Scarlet Raiders (3-11) to a 2-0 lead.
Sophomore starter
Chris Nichols (0-2) carried a shutout into the sixth inning before a 2-run single by freshman rightfielder Devon DeRaad knotted the score. DeRaad lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to in the eighth to plate the game-winning run and start a 2-run rally.
After junior outfielder Chris Strain delivered an RBI double to left field to end the scoring, freshman
Chas Bohannon came on to get the final two outs for the Raiders.
Senior righthander Mitch Margolis got the complete-game victory for the Tigers (11-11), yielding five hits and two walks while striking out 11.
Rutgers-Newark loaded the bases in the eighth on back-to-back 1-out singles by sophomore centerfielder
Ryan MacFarlane and senior first baseman
Vin Troisi and a 2-out walk by Napolitano. But Margolis got a ground ball to second base to escape the jam.
Troisi was the only Raider with two hits in the game.
IN THE OPENER, Gencarelli went four for four with a solo home run down the left field line in the fifth plus a double, but the Tigers piled up 16 hits against four Raider pitchers.

Occidental scored six runs in the opening three innings starting with a 2-run home run in the first against senior righthander

Ryan Staub was the only Rutgers-Newark who went unscathed, shutting down the Tigers on two hits while striking out two in two full innings for work.
Junior first baseman Johnathan Brooks went five for five with three doubles and a pair of RBIs for Occidental while junior third baseman A.J. Libunao drove in five runs with a 2-run homer in the first, an RBI single to cap a 3-run sixth inning and a 2-run double to ignite a 4-run eighth.
Rutgers-Newark closes out its spring break trip to California tomorrow taking on Occidental in an 11 a.m. (PDT) contest on Anderson Field.
