BOX SCORENEWARK, NJ – An injury in doubles play kept Rutgers University-Newark from upsetting Rutgers University-Camden in a New Jersey Athletic Conference match on The Golden Dome Courts. The Scarlet Raiders fell, 5-4, to the Scarlet Raptors with an injury retirement loss in doubles play looming large in the final result.

Nandini Gami registered singles victories for Rutgers-Newark (0-2, NJAC 0-1) while Popow joined senior
Yara Elsekhely for a doubles victory.

Kesha Patel and freshman
Cristina Faviao were ahead 5-4 against the Raptors' Theresa Adamson and Donna Safar on the No. 3 doubles court when Patel was forced to withdraw because of an injury. Popow and Elsekhely swept past Angela Errigo and Christine Abacan, 8-2, on the No. 2 double court, but he Raptors claimed the top-flight court to enter singles play with a decisive 2-1 edge.

Popow raced past Errigo, 6-1, 6-2, on the No. 2 singles court while Tchorzewska handled Adamson, 6-1, 6-4 on the No. 4 court. Gami joined Popow by posting her first collegiate singles victory with a 6-1, 6-2 decision over Safar on the No. 6 court.

Rutgers-Newark hosts John Jay on Monday at 4 o'clock and York NY on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. to end a string of four straight home matches to start the season.
