NEWARK, N.J. (November 23, 2015) – The 2-1 Rutgers University-Newark men's basketball team will open its New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) schedule on Tuesday night when the Scarlet Raiders host New Jersey City University.
Tip-off is slated for 8 p.m. from The Golden Dome Arena in Newark.
Rutgers-Newark started the year with a 21-point road win at Hunter College Tuesday, before splitting a pair of games this past weekend in the Gettysburg College Tip-Off Tournament. R-N earned an eight-point victory over Washington and Lee University Friday night, before suffering a tough loss to the host Bullets Saturday. R-N was in control for most of the team's first two matchups, before faltering late against Gettysburg.
The Scarlet Raiders have won the last three meetings against the Gothic Knights and 5-of-7 overall, going 2-0 during the 2014-15 season.
NJCU will bring a record of 1-2 into Tuesday night's game, falling at Brooklyn College and against No. 19 Franklin & Marshall College before earning a 74-66 win at Messiah College in the Townes Place Suites Tip-Off Tournament Consolation game.
Jalen Harris, Chinwe Wosu and James Julius lead NJCU, averaging 18.7, 15.7 and 10.3 points per game, with Jeremiah Boone-Alexandre also scoring double figures (10.0). Wosu also paces the team in rebounding (8.3/game) and assists (2.3/game) and is shooting 74.1 percent from the field.
Rutgers-Newark has been led by three seniors and a sophomore in senior forward
Jordan McDaniel, senior guard
John Snow, senior forward
David Azoroh and sophomore guard
Tyler Ofray.
McDaniel is averaging 17.3 points and 10.0 rebounds as well as 2.0 assists, needing just 36 shots for his 52 points. Snow is pouring in 15.7 points per game, corralling 7.7 caroms and 2.3 assists, leading the team with seven steals as well, while Azoroh is shooting 61.5 percent from the field, averaging 13.7 points per game. Ofray is at 13.3 points per game, tying for the team lead with 2.3 assists while grabbing 4.0 rebounds per contest. Ofray is shooting an exceptional 61.9 percent so far this season. Snow and McDaniel were each named to the Gettysburg Tip-Off's All-Tournament team after quality performances over the weekend.
Rutgers-Newark is holding the opposition to 38.6 percent shooting and is averaging five more rebounds per game than its foes and will be looking to improve upon those metrics Tuesday night.
