NEWARK, N.J. (September 14, 2015) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's tennis team fell in its New Jersey Athletic Conference opener Monday night at The Golden Dome Courts in Newark. The Pioneers of William Paterson University downed the Scarlet Raiders by a score of 9-0.
Leading R-N was freshman
Bryanna Thaxton who forced a third and final set at No. 2 singles, but ended up falling 11-9 in a tie break because the match had already been decided.
"I was happy with the fight we showed today," Head Coach
Tom Battaglia said. "I saw some improvements across the board and was happy with the way we competed."
Thaxton won the first set 6-4, and nearly took the second, eventually dropping it 7-5 which led to the tie break.
The Scarlet Raiders were swept at No. 1 singles, and
Urvi Shah won three games at No 3. Veteran
Jamie Lee Buhain won three games in a loss at No. 4, as did
Julibeth Hernandez at No. 5.
In doubles action, the Scarlet Raiders were swept 8-0 in the first and third flight, but picked up four games at second doubles, with Buhain and Thaxton battling hard.
Rutgers-Newark will return to action Wednesday afternoon when it hosts Richard Stockton in an NJAC battle at 4 p.m.
