Women’s Tennis Edged by Rutgers-Camden in Opener

CAMDEN, N.J. (September 5, 2015) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's tennis team was edged by Rutgers University-Camden, 5-4, Saturday afternoon in the 2015 season and New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opener for the Scarlet Raiders.

The Scarlet Raiders earned a pair of tallies via default – taking victories at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles. Camden was able to earn a decisive 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles to make it a 2-1 match, and tied things at two apiece heading into singles play with an 8-6 victory in the second doubles flight. Freshman Urvi Shaw and freshman Kallah Masudi fought hard, but the Scarlet Raptors were able to prevail.

In addition to the default at six, R-N earned wins at No. 4 and No. 5 singles. Senior Jamie Lee Buhain picked up a convincing 6-1, 6-3 victory at three, with freshman Julibeth Hernandez coming out on top 6-0, 6-0 at four.

Shaw battled for the Scarlet Raiders out of the third slot. After dropping the opening set, 6-1, and falling behind 4-2 in the second, the rookie came back to take the lead (5-4) but was overcome late by Christine Abacan.

The Scarlet Raiders (0-1, 0-1 NJAC) will return to action Thursday when they host NJAC rival Ramapo College on The Golden Dome Tennis Courts. The match is slated for a 4:30 p.m. start.
