Rutgers-Newark Men's Basketball Highlights
WAYNE, N.J. (January 8, 2016) – Coming off an 81-63 New Jersey Athletic Conference win Wednesday night over Rutgers University-Camden in The Golden Dome Arena, the Rutgers University-Newark men's basketball team will be looking for its fifth conference win of season Saturday at 3 p.m. when it battles William Paterson University.
The Scarlet Raiders – who boast an overall record of 9-4 and a conference mark of 4-2 – will be hoping for revenge when they take the court as Paterson swept the season series last year. The Pioneers have won 3-of-4 overall after splitting a pair of games in 2013-14, with the last R-N victory coming on December 7 in The Golden Dome Arena.
Paterson brings a record of 7-5 into Saturday's matchup and is 2-4 in the conference. The Pioneers suffered a 78-73 loss at Kean University Wednesday night, ending a three-game winning streak that featured victories by a total of 50 points (16.6/game).
Four Paterson players are scoring in double figures, and senior guard Bright Mensah is leading the way averaging 19.2 per game. Mensah also leads the team in steals and assists, sitting second in three-pointers and third in rebounding.
The Pioneers are third in the conference in scoring defense (69.0), fourth in scoring margin (plus-4.4), fourth in field-goal percentage (43.1) and field-goal percentage defense (42.0) and third in blocked shots (3.3 per game).
Rutgers-Newark leads the conference in blocks per game with 5.2, field-goal percentage defense (39.3 percent), three-point field-goal percentage defense (30.4 percent) and field-goal percentage (46.3 percent), and is second in scoring defense, allowing just 66.0 points per game. The Scarlet Raiders are second in scoring margin (plus-6.9), third in free-throw percentage (71.8 percent), second in three-point field-goal percentage (34.1 percent) and third in rebounding margin (plus-2.7).
Senior guard
Jordan McDaniel leads the Scarlet Raiders and is second in the NJAC in scoring, averaging 19.4 points per game. Senior guard
John Snow is fifth in scoring (17.0), while McDaniel's 7.0 rebounds/game is good for No. 3 in the NJAC. Senior forward
David Azoroh sits third in field-goal percentage (55.6 percent) and McDaniel is sixth in that same metric (50.9 percent), while senior guard
Vik Singh is second in three-point field-goal percentage (45.7 percent) and sophomore guard
Tyler Ofray is fifth (40.5 percent). Azoroh (20) and sophomore center
Dave Lunsford (19) are second and third in blocked shots.
In terms of national ranks, the Scarlet Raiders are fifth in the country in total blocks (68), 17th in made free throws, 17th in blocked shots per game and 21st in attempted free throws.
