GALLOWAY, N.J. (October 5, 2016) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's tennis team was defeated by a score of 8-1 at Stockton University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) match Wednesday night.
 
Leading Rutgers-Newark was junior Marthalyn Johnson who earned a win over Summer Conover at No. 1 singles. The Scarlet Raider newcomer bested one of the top players in the conference in straight sets, 6-1, 7-5.
 
Rutgers-Newark falls to 2-6 overall and 1-4 in the league, while the Ospreys improve to 7-1 overall and 4-1 in the NJAC.
 
Despite the loss, Rutgers-Newark played solid tennis, winning 12 games in singles action and 11 in doubles play which were both marked improvements from the 2015 meeting between the two schools.
 
Stockton won comfortably at No. 2 doubles, but the pairing of Jamie Lee Buhain and Johnson at No. 1 won five games in an 8-5 loss, and the duo of Kallah Masudi and Nicole Murray won six (8-6) at No. 3.
 
Buhain won four games in a 6-3, 6-1 loss at No. 3 and Emanuellie Romelus won a pair at No. 6 as Rutgers-Newark was without two starters in the contest.
 
"Missing two starters and playing the way we did today was very impressive," said Head Coach Tom Battaglia. "Marthalyn's victory was definitely the best of her career, Jamie played very well and both of them put up an excellent fight in doubles play."
 
Rutgers-Newark will return to the courts Friday with a non-conference match at Brooklyn College.
