BROOKLYN, N.Y. (October 7, 2016) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's tennis team cruised to a 7-2 non-conference victory over Brooklyn College Friday night, picking up its third triumph of the season.
Rutgers-Newark improves to 3-6 overall and has already eclipsed its win total from 2015-16 in five less matches played. R-N will look to make it two in a row Sunday when the Scarlet Raiders battle Rutgers University-Camden in a New Jersey Athletic Conference match on The Golden Dome Courts in Newark.
The two teams competed in singles play first with the Scarlet Raiders picking up four of the six points.
"Brooklyn has some very solid singles players," Head Coach
Tom Battaglia said. "Their team is very athletic, but our ladies did a great job staying with them, and they came up big during crucial points. When games went to deuce I was really pleased to see us stay composed and fight to stay with them.
In singles play,
Jessica Smoot earned an 8-3 win at No. 1 and freshman
Nell Karpinski picked up a well-earned 9-7 triumph at No. 3. Senior
Jamie Lee Buhain and
Nicole Murray pocketed the two other singles victories as Buhain won 8-4 at No. 4 and Murray was the victor in an 8-5 match at No. 6.
Rutgers-Newark swept doubles competition to lock up the win as Karpinski and Smoot won via injury default at No. 1.
Bryanna Thaxton and Buhain fought hard for a win at No. 2, besting Fatma Seraeldin and Elizaveta Meshkalova, 9-8, while
Kallah Masudi and
Julibeth Hernandez blanked the opposition out of the third slot.
PERFECTION! Jamie Lee Buhain,
Nell Karpinski and
Jessica Smoot all went 2-0 on the day.
R-N has now won two of its last three outings dating back to September 16. The Scarlet Raiders' previous two matches had been washed out at Western Connecticut State University and St. Joe's – Long Island.
