NEWARK, N.J. (October 9, 2016) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's tennis team rolled over Rutgers University-Camden for a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) win Sunday evening, topping the Scarlet Raptors by a score of 7-2.
After not winning a single conference match since 2011, Rutgers-Newark now has two NJAC victories this year. R-N is 4-6 overall and 2-4 in the league, while Camden is 0-7 overall and 0-5 in the NJAC. The Scarlet Raiders pocketed their first conference victory in 2016 against William Paterson University, and R-N nearly clipped Kean University earlier this year.

Nell Karpinski and veteran
Jessica Smoot both went 2-0 for Rutgers to lead the way. Karpinski and Smoot teamed up for an easy 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles, helping Newark to a 2-1 lead after pairing play.
Bryanna Thaxton and
Kallah Masudi nabbed the other doubles marker, taking an 8-2 win out of the third slot.
Junior
Marthalyn Johnson recorded an extremely hard-fought win at No. 1 singles in a back-and-forth affair. Johnson took the first set 6-2 and fell in the second 3-6 before scratching out an 11-9 triumph in the third. Smoot went the distance in a marathon, winning 6-1, 5-7, 10-7 at No. 2, while senior

"We received hard-fought wins from every single player tonight," said Head Coach
Tom Battaglia after his team's win. "We came through in some tight singles matches today, and I am really proud of what this team has been able to continually accomplish this season."
Rutgers-Newark completes NJAC play with two victories and now has four triumphs this season which is double the amount of wins from a season ago with two matches still to play this fall and three more in the spring.
"I can't say enough about the resiliency of this group," added Battalgia. "We don't rest until this the last player finishes and we continue to pull together regardless of the individual result. It's great to see."
Rutgers-Newark hosts FDU-Florham Thursday in a non-conference match on The Golden Dome Courts.
