MADISON, N.J. (April 6, 2016) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's tennis team was defeated at Drew University by a score of 9-0 Wednesday afternoon in what was unofficially the program's first-ever spring match.
First-year Head Coach
Tom Battaglia is looking to take the program to the next level and feels it is extremely important for his players to compete in both the fall and spring.
"If we want to start winning more and improving, we are going to need to work year round," said Battaglia. "It's important to practice all year, it's important to stay in shape all year and it is also key for our women to compete throughout the year."
Drew picked up 8-0 wins at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles, with the Scarlet Raider pair of
Nicole Murray and
Kallah Masudi taking a game in an 8-1 loss at No. 3.
Veteran
Jamie Lee Buhain won a team-best four games out of the No. 4 slot in singles play, with
Jessica Smooth taking two at No. 1.
Rutgers-Newark will host Mount Saint Mary College Thursday at 5 p.m.
