Women’s Tennis Tabbed Sixth in NJAC Preseason Poll

Schedule | NJAC Release

PITMAN, N.J. (August 30, 2016)
– The Rutgers University-Newark women's tennis team was picked to finish sixth in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) according to a poll of the league's seven head coaches.

The College of New Jersey, Ramapo College, Stockton University, William Paterson University and Kean University occupied the top-five slots, while Rutgers University-Camden rounded things out at No. 7.

Despite a tough 2-12 record in 2015-16 under then first-year Head Coach Tom Battaglia, things are looking up for the Scarlet Raider program. In his first full recruiting cycle the team has a program-record 12 student-athletes competing, and will be playing year-round for the second time.

"I am really happy with how the team improved over the course of last year, and how things have gone so far this preseason," said Battaglia. "The ladies came in ready to work and have been doing a great job each and every day."

The 34th season of NJAC women's tennis begins on Thursday, September 1 when Kean and Rutgers-Camden take part in non-conference matches. The Scarlet Raiders open the following day when they host preseason conference favorite TCNJ and non-conference foe Ohio Northern University on The Golden Dome Courts in a doubleheader.

The NJAC does not sponsor a conference tournament in the sport of women's tennis, meaning that the league title is awarded to the team with the best record in the conference regular-season play. The winner of the NJAC regular-season crown also garners the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship in May of 2017.

Rutgers-Newark has 16 matches on the schedule, six in the conference and eight outside of it. Seven of the matches will be at home including league showdowns with TCNJ, Kean and Rutgers-Camden.

The Scarlet Raiders' final home match of the fall will take place on October 15 against Hunter College and several matches are in the works for the spring.
