NEWARK, N.J. (April 21, 2017) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's tennis team was defeated by Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham by a score of 9-0 Friday on The Golden Dome Courts in a non-league match.
Rutgers-Newark – playing down several players – dropped to 5-9 on the season, while FDU moved to 3-9.
The match marked the end of the 2016-17 season for Rutgers-Newark. It was only the second time in program history the team conducted a spring season.
All the matches were played as pro sets and highlighting the doubles action was the pairing of
Marthalyn Johnson and
Jamie Lee Buhain who won six games in an 8-6 loss out of the No. 1 spot.
Johnson won a team-high six games at No. 1 singles, with freshman
Nell Karpinski winning five and sophomore
Jessica Smoot doing the same at No. 4.
