NEWARK, N.J. (April 13, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's tennis team earned a 6-3 win over John Jay Friday afternoon on The Golden Dome Courts.
It was the final home match in the careers of
Brandon Davis and
Kevin Martin who were both two-year members of the Scarlet Raider program.
Rutgers-Newark improves to 2-6 overall with the triumph, while John Jay drops to 3-4 in defeat. R-N will visit York College (NY) on Saturday looking to make it two-straight victories. The Raiders will also be looking for their first road win of the season.
"It was great to send our seniors out with a win in their final home match," said Head Coach
Andres Bustani after the match. "I also felt it was our best match of the season, and I hope we can take some momentum and use it the rest of the weekend."
Rutgers-Newark took a 2-1 lead after doubles play. Davis and sophomore
Alan Yu – who was playing at No. 1 singles for the first time in his career - earned a triumph out of the top slot. Martin and
Richard Nguyen earned a tough 8-6 victory at No. 2 in one of many competitive matches on the day.
"The competition was good today, so for us to be able to go out and win some tough matches was great to see," added Bustani. "Whether it was the seniors each getting at least one win, Alan stepping up a level in doubles or just battling against a tough opponent, I was pleased with what I saw from our entire team."
Davis rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 win out of the top singles slot, with Yu going 6-4, 6-0 for a win at No. 3. Newcomer
Vihang Patel won 6-3, 6-1 at fifth singles, clinching the win for Rutgers-Newark, while
Deonte Gamboa – playing just his third match of the year – tallied a victory at No. 6 in a shortened match (7-6, 5-3).
After Saturday's non-league match at York, the Scarlet Raiders will travel south to take on Rutgers University-Camden Sunday in a GNAC match.
