CAMDEN, N.J. (April 14, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's tennis team extended its winning streak to three matches on Sunday, rolling to an 8-1 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) win over rival Rutgers University-Camden.
"It was really important that we take care of business in the conference and today we did that," said Head Coach
Andres Bustani after his team's biggest win of the season. "I think we played well as a team today, did what we needed to, and now we have some momentum heading into the stretch run. Let's hope we can keep it going."
Rutgers-Newark moves to 1-1 in the GNAC and 4-6 overall. The Scarlet Raiders will look to make it four-straight wins next Saturday when they head to New Haven, Conn. to take on conference foe Albertus Magnus College.
Rutgers-Newark held a 2-1 lead after doubles play, earning wins out of the first and third slots.
Brandon Davis and
Veer Kachhiapatel took 8-of-10 games in an 8-2 win out of the first flight, with
Vihang Patel and
Alan Yu taking an 8-3 decision at No. 3.
Newark swept the singles action, and three of the victories were shutouts. Davis rolled 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1, with fellow senior
Kevin Martin doing the same at No. 5. Patel rolled over his opponent 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 as well, with Kachhiapatel earning a 6-2, 6-2 triumph at No. 2. Sophomore
Alan Yu won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3, and veteran
Richard Nguyen pocketed a 6-3, 6-3 triumph out of the fourth slot.
Rutgers-Camden drops to 1-1 in the conference and 2-6 overall. The Scarlet Raiders hold the tiebreak on the Scarlet Raptors now, and with a win over Albertus Magnus, R-N will punch a ticket to the upcoming GNAC Tournament.
