NEW HAVEN, Conn. (April 21, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's tennis team won a fourth-straight match Saturday at conference rival Albertus Magnus, topping the Falcons by a score of 9-0.
Rutgers-Newark moves to 2-1 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference and 5-6 overall, and the Scarlet Raiders will return to action Sunday with a non-league matchup at FDU-Florham.
Newark has also locked up a spot in the upcoming conference tournament and will visit top-seeded Ramapo College in a league semifinal next Saturday.
"We are playing well right now, and I was happy we took care of business today," said Head Coach
Andres Bustani. "The guys are showing a lot of improvement, and Sunday's match at FDU will be great preparation as we start to prepare for the conference tournament."
Rutgers-Newark dropped just one total game in doubles action. The No. 1 pairing of
Brandon Davis and Veer Kacchiapatel and the No. 3 pairing of
Alan Yu and
Vihang Patel both rolled 8-0, while
Kevin Martin and
Richard Nguyen cruised 8-1 out of the second slot.
Davis did not drop a game out of the No. 1 slot on his way to a 6-0, 6-0 sweep, as did Yu at three, Martin and fifth and Patel at No. 6. Kacchiapatel rolled 6-1, 6-2 out of the second slot and Nguyen dropped just a single game in his 6-1, 6-0 victory out of the fourth slot.
Sunday's match at FDU is slated for a 10 a.m. start in Madison.
