NEWARK, N.J. (January 18, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's tennis team suffered a 6-3 loss at the hands of Pratt Institute Saturday on The Golden Dome Courts in the season opener for each squad.
 
The Scarlet Raiders – playing competitively for the first time since the 2016 season – battled throughout and showed a lot of fight.
 
"Considering this was our first competitive match in a while, I was pleased with what I saw," said Head Coach Andres Bustani after the match. "I think it was a match that could have gone our way, but ultimately I was happy with how we competed. We need to improve in big moments and win those key points, but I think that will come as we continue to improve."
 
Pratt was able to take a 3-0 lead after doubles, but the Scarlet Raiders acquitted themselves well in singles play. Returner Nell Karpinski came back in her match out of the first singles slot to win. She dropped the first set 0-6, but made the necessary adjustments to earn triumphs in the second (6-4) and third (10-6).
 
Newcomers Karla Pelaez was the second Scarlet Raider to pocket a win, while newcomer Sophia Raza did the same. The third and fourth singles players for the hosts each won 7-6 in the first set, prior to the match being called.
 
"Seeing Nell (Karpinski) make an adjustment to get her first win of the season was great, and I was proud of Karla and how she competed," added Bustani.
 
Rutgers-Newark will return to action at the College of Staten Island next Saturday looking for its first win of the 2018 season.
