NEWARK, N.J. (September 13, 2018) – The Rutgers-University Newark women's tennis team fell to visiting Brooklyn College on The Golden Dome Courts tonight, 6-3. The Scarlet Raiders fall to 0-2 on the season while the Bulldogs improve to 1-0.
Rutgers-Newark earned a point in doubles action when rookies
Sophia Raza and
Emely Conza defeated their opponents 8-4 at the no. 3 position. Unfortunately, Brooklyn won at first and second doubles by the same score to take a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.
Seniors
Merna Kamel and
Kallah Masudi were the standout performers in singles action. Kamel conceded just one game on her way to a 6-1, 6-0 victory at no. 6 while Masudi cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win in the fourth singles position. Still, the visitors earned points at the top three singles spots to secure the match before Raza eventually fell in a marathon contest at no. 5 that went to a super tiebreaker, ending in favor of the Bulldogs 4-6, 6-1, 10-7.
"Tonight was another tough match but I thought we competed better." said Head Coach
Andres Bustani, "While this competition didn't go away, I know we'll keep building and growing stronger as the season progresses."
The Raiders return to action tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. when they host New Jersey Athletic Conference foe TCNJ.
