NEWARK, N.J. (September 15, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's tennis team concluded its four-match homestand by hosting non-conference foe John Jay College this afternoon on The Golden Dome Courts. The Scarlet Raiders battled but fell 8-1, moving to 0-4 on the season while the Bloodhounds improve to 3-1.
Newark got off to a tough start, dropping all three doubles matches. Rookie
Sophia Raza and senior
Kallah Masudi fought to the closest decision at the no. 2 position but they eventually fell 8-6 while John Jay won the other two matches by 8-3 scores.
In singles action, junior
Nell Karpinski produced the Raiders' victory for the afternoon with a marathon competition. Karpinski lost the first set 6-0 but battled back to dominate the second stanza, 6-1. In the third and decisive set, Karpinski edged her opponent in a super tiebreak, 10-6, to win the match.
R-N lost at no. 2, 5, and 6 in straight sets despite senior
Bryanna Thaxton fighting to a tiebreak in the second set of her competition in the no. 2 slot. Masudi and Raza fell in super-sets at no. 3 and no. 4.
"Despite some adverse results, I believe some of our student-athletes figured out their game and played really well." said Head Coach
Andres Bustani, "Nell and Bryanna really battled through tough singles matches while second doubles had a long, close contest as well. Every match we have played we have been in reach of a win but we need to be mentally tougher in those big moments going forward."
The Scarlet Raiders hit the road for the first time in 11 days as they travel to New Jersey Athletic Conference opponent Ramapo College on Wednesday with the contest scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
