NEWARK, NJ | Rutgers University-Newark is unveiling its Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2023, with plans to celebrate the memories and accolades of six deserving members. This year's chosen class will be honored on Saturday, February 25, 2023, at Ruth Bader Ginsburg (Formerly 15 Washington) in Newark, NJ at 5:00 pm.
The honorees of the Rutgers University-Newark Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2023 are:
- Jordan McDaniel - Men's Basketball (2013-16)
- Raphael Araujo - Men's Soccer (2013-14)
- Cristina Estremera - Women's Soccer (2012-15)
- Sara Corson - Women's Soccer (2014-15)
- Rachel deGroh (Witt) - Women's Volleyball (2009-12)
- Kevin McCandless - Men's Volleyball (2013-16)
The 2015-16 Pony Wilson NJAC Player of the Year, and two-time First Team All-NJAC recipient, McDaniel played in 86 games throughout his career, tallying 2,375 minutes. He shot 52.6% from the field and averaged a career of 14.9 points per game. In his final season, he recorded 21.4 points per game for a career total of 1,284 points. In his tenure with Rutgers-Newark, he averaged 5.35 rebounds per game and 39.3% shooting form 3-point range. From the charity stripe, he cashed in 73% of the time and earned eight double-doubles in his time with Rutgers-Newark.
Raphael Araujo played for the Scarlet Raiders for two seasons and made an impressive impact in just those two years. His first year with Rutgers-Newark he was named NJAC Co-Offensive Player of the Year and followed that up with his second First Team All-NJAC nod in his final season. Araujo holds the record for most goals scored in a season with 27 in the 2013 season. Adding to his slew of awards, Araujo was also a two-time All-American and ECAC Offensive Player of the Year.
Cristina Estremera played in 87 games throughout her career and tallied 34 goals and 16 assists, good for a career tally of 84 points. Seven of her 34 goals were game winners. In her career, Estremera was a two-time All-NJAC Honorable Mention and a First Team All-NJAC player, picking up Third Team NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA DIII All-South Atlantic Region.
Sara Corson played for the Scarlet Raiders for two seasons and was extremely efficient in both. In just two seasons, Corson tallied 45 goals (11 game winners) in 47 games while adding 11 assist, good for 101 points. Corson was named the 2015 NJAC Offensive Player of the Year while also earning First Team and Second Team All-NJAC in her two seasons. A constant threat to score, Corson terrorized opposing defenders who often had no answer to her skill and scoring ability. Corson's 24 goals stand as the highest single season mark in Rutgers-Newark history.
Rachel Witt was impressive during her tenure with the Scarlet Raiders, recording 952 kills in her four years. Witt's skills didn't just show on the offensive side of the play but also on the defensive side as she tallied 171 total blocks and hit .232 for her career. She was also surgical from behind the service line, securing 237 service aces in her career. In her time with the Scarlet Raiders she was named First Team All-NJAC, two-time All-NJAC Honorable, and Rutgers-Newark's NJAIAW Woman of the Year.
Kevin McCandless played in 96 matches in his career and secured an astounding 3,266 assists. McCandless was named 2015 CVC Tournament MVP and First Team All-CVC. His talents weren't limited to just the court as he made the CVC All-Academic list and in 2015 was also named Rutgers-Newark's Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year. McCandless consistently found his open teammate, putting them in a position to succeed while making the most of his opportunities when the defense didn't expect it. He secured 119 kills in his career while adding 466 digs, 26 solo blocks and 119 block assists.
