#9 Men's Volleyball Takes Down Ramapo on Ring Night, 3-0

NEWARK, NJ | The #9 ranked Rutgers University-Newark men's volleyball squad opened their 2023 campaign Tuesday evening against New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opponents, Ramapo College. The Scarlet Raiders won in straight sets, 3-0 (25-11, 27-25, 25-22) to improve to 1-0 while Ramapo fell to 0-1. Before the start of tonight's match, the Scarlet Raiders honored their men's volleyball team with their NJAC and CVC Championship rings from last season.

Andrew Zaleck picked up right where he left off last season and paced the Scarlet Raiders with 16 kills on 30 attacks (.433%) while Aidan Apito and Eric Hollenbach followed up with eight and seven, respectively. Justin Tuohy returned to setting duties and amassed 27 assists in the win. Defensively, Matt Nikishin lead the team with 12 digs while Daniel Quay was a wall at the net, tallying six total blocks.

It was all Rutgers-Newark in the opening set of the season as Rutgers-Newark jumped out to a 15-4 lead, leaving the Roadrunners scrambling to catch up. Following a service ace by Martin Chromulak, Tuohy put another marker on the scoreboard with a kill to increase their lead. Ramapo was unable to find their stride in the first set, as the Scarlet Raiders used a 5-1 run to close out the set and take a 1-0 lead in the match.

Ramapo bounced back in a big way in the second set, pushing the set past 25 points. After back-and-forth action early on, Ramapo took an 11-10 lead before kills by Zaleck and Chromulak put the Scarlet Raiders back in front. Rutgers-Newark fell behind once more but used a 5-1 run to take a 23-21 lead after Derek Au set up Zaleck and Quay for kills. Ramapo fought back and brought themselves within one of stealing a set from the Scarlet Raiders but a 3-0 run by Rutgers-Newark gave them a 2-0 lead in the match.

Once again another battled ensued in the third set, however, the Scarlet Raiders remained in control for a majority of the set. Ramapo came within four, 16-12, however, Josh Ledesma stopped Ramapo from gaining momentum with a kill. The Roadrunners made one last push towards the end of the set, getting within two of the Scarlet Raiders however a service error handed the match to the Scarlet Raiders.
