#10 Men's Volleyball Takes Care of NJCU on the Road, 3-1

JERSEY CITY, NJ | #10 Rutgers University-Newark men's volleyball disposed of New Jersey City University (NJCU), 3-1 (25-15, 25-15, 25-23, 25-20) in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) action. The Scarlet Raiders spoiled NJCU's home opener and improved to 2-0 while NJCU dropped to 0-1 on the year. 

Andrew Zaleck once again led the Scarlet Raiders with 13 kills and second year outside, Josh Ledesma added a career-high 11 kills. Martin Chromulak was spectacular at the net and secured seven kills with .417 hitting percentage while picking up five total blocks. Matt Nikishin paced the team with 15 kills and Justin Tuohy led the team with 37 assists. 

In the opening set, the Scarlet Raiders hit .269 as a team and tallied their highest kills of the match with 14. The Scarlet Raiders and the Gothic Knights went back and forth in the opening set as Rutgers-Newark led just 11-10 in the early goings. A pair of kills by Zaleck followed up by a service ace by the Tuohy put the Scarlet Raiders up 15-10. Daniel Quay then ignited Rutgers-Newark's offense down the stretch as they went on a 6-1 run to close out the set to go up 1-0 in the match.  

Similar to the first set, the Scarlet Raiders took down the Gothic Knights, 25-15. Rutgers-Newark used a strong start to jump out to a 9-4 lead before NJCU cut the lead down to two. Rutgers-Newark responded with a 6-1 run to increase their lead to 18-10. The Gothic Knights were unable to gain momentum as the Scarlet Raiders remained stout and took a 2-0 lead in the match. 

With their backs against the wall, the Gothic Knights took set three from the Scarlet Raiders after Rutgers-Newark hit .094 for the set. Rutgers-Newark led 20-18 after Zaleck hammered home a kill, however, NJCU responded with a 5-2 and leap frogged Rutgers-Newark 23-22. Zaleck tied it up at 23 but two errors by Rutgers-Newark gave the set to NJCU. 

In the final set, the Scarlet Raiders jumped out to a large 15-7 and carried that momentum until the final point to start their 2023 campaign, 2-0.
