#15 Men's Volleyball Drops 4 Set Match to #11 NYU, 3-1

SPRINGFIELD, MA | In their 8th appearance in the International Volleyball Hall of Fame Morgan Classic #15 Rutgers University-Newark Scarlet Raiders stumbled against #11 New York University, 3-1 (25-19, 25-20, 25-17, 25-20). The loss is the Scarlet Raiders' third in a row and are now 4-3 on the year while NYU improved to 7-1.

Andrew Zaleck tallied a team-high 16 kills in the loss and hit .133 for the match and Derek Au paced the team with 33 assists. Matt Nikishin continues to dominate the back line and tallied 12 digs while Eric Hollenbach led the way with three blocks.

The Scarlet Raiders trailed early on in the opening set but a kill by Justin Tuohy followed by an attacking error tied the set at 16. Zaleck then kept his squad in it with a kill, however, NYU used an 8-2 run to close out the set and take a 1-0 lead in the match.

Rutgers-Newark responded with a win in the second set to level the match at one. Tuohy gave the Scarlet Raiders a 10-7 lead which put them in the drivers seat for the remainder of the set. Daniel Quay further extended the Scarlet Raiders' lead which allowed Zaleck and Tuohy to secure the final two points.

NYU found their stride again in the third set and took a 9-5 lead with a 5-0 run before using another 5-0 run later in the set to keep Rutgers-Newark at bay as they took the third set to go up 2-1. A strong start for the Scarlet Raiders in the fourth set was not enough to send the game into a fifth set as the Violets strung together seven points to set them on the path to victory.

The Scarlet Raiders will return to action for the consolation game tomorrow afternoon where they will face off against MIT.
