Zaleck Sets The Dome Ablaze With Record Setting Performance

NEWARK, NJ | Zaleck not only nearly broke the NCAA Division III record for kills in a match, coming just four short, but set a Rutgers University-Newark record 39 kills in a match. His 39 kills are the 4th-highest in Division III history and helped the Scarlet Raiders take down #7 SUNY New Paltz in five sets, 3-2 (25-19, 25-22, 25-22, 25-21, 20-18).  The win bumps the Scarlet Raiders up to 6-5 overall while the Hawks drop down to 13-6.

Zaleck led the Scarlet Raiders with 39 kills on a red-hot .409 hit percentage while Daniel Quay played a clean game with 10 kills and no errors, good for a .588 hit percentage. Quay and Jasjeet Singh tallied five and three blocks, respectively. Yann Gomes flew around the back line all night for the Scarlet Raiders and tallied 9 digs, just two behind the team leader Matt Nikishin. Derek Au also set a career-high with 53 assists in the win.

The Scarlet Raiders got off to a slow start against the Hawks, dropping the first set, 25-19. New Paltz trailed by two early on, but closed the gap with two straight kills before a service ace put them over the top. The Hawks used the momentum to further extend their lead with a 6-1 run. Trailing by as much as four, Rutgers-Newark was unable to regain control of the set as they'd fall behind 1-0.

Rutgers-Newark bounced back in the second set with an early 5-1 run that put them in front. A kill by Zaleck started the run before he ended the run with a service ace followed by an error. The Hawks brought it within one and it seemed as though they were going to overtake the Scarlet Raiders, however, Daniel Quay had other plans as they picked up a kill off of a pass from Au. Zaleck went on to even the match at one after a powerful kill from Au.

The Scarlet Raiders kept their form in the third set and hit .355 as a squad to go up 2-1 in the match. The third set saw the Scarlet Raiders having to fight back for a majority of the set before Zaleck ripped off a pair of kills to help Rutgers-Newark go on a 5-1 run to close out the set.

New Paltz held the Scarlet Raiders to their lowest hit percentage of the match (.163) as Rutgers-Newark saw the 4th set slip away from them towards the end.

In the 5th and final set, New Paltz remained in front and led by as much as three down the stretch. With the Hawks just two points away from victory, the Scarlet Raiders, behind Zaleck, tied the set up at 13 before New Paltz briefly took the lead. After some back and forth, the Scarlet Raiders eventually benefitted from a service error by New Paltz to set up Zaleck to secure the win for the Scarlet Raiders.
