Baseball Falls to Keystone via Late 8th Inning Rally, 10-6

AUBURNDALE, FL | The Rutgers University-Newark baseball squad saw its one-run lead disappear after Keystone plated six runs in the bottom of the 8th to knock off the Scarlet Raiders, 10-6. The Scarlet Raiders suffered its 3rd loss of the season to fall to 7-3 while the Giants improved to 2-4.

Paul Recchia led the Scarlet Raiders with a pair of hits in three plate appearances with two runs and an RBI. Eric Recchia, Michael Weinbel, and Peter Cortez all added an RBI in the loss. On the mound, Daniel Reardon got the start and hurled five innings, while allowing three runs on four hits with two strikeouts. The decision would go to Vince Taylor (1-1) who allowed three runs on three hits in the bottom of the 8th.

Rutgers-Newark opened the game with a bang, scoring three runs in the top of the stanza after Paul Recchia brought home a run before crossing the dish himself via a passed ball. His brother, Eric Recchia, also came across home via an errant throw by the pitcher. Keystone responded with two runs in the bottom of the second frame before knotting it up in the 6th.

The Scarlet Raiders once again recorded a three-run inning with all three runs being batted in. Eric Recchia singled to bring home NJAC Rookie of the Week Gilroy Prial, before Weinbel did the same. With the bases loaded, Cortez remained patient at the plate and was hit by a pitch to tally another run for the Scarlet Raiders to put them ahead by two.

With a one run lead in the 8th, disaster struck for the Scarlet Raiders as Keystone would go on to tally six runs to take the lead with just one inning to go. With their backs against the wall, the Scarlet Raiders were unable to find the runs needed to regain the lead.
