Block City! #15 Rutgers-Newark Men's Volleyball Tallies 25 Blocks in 5-Set Win Over Randolph-Macon

NEWARK, NJ | The 15th-ranked Scarlet Raiders men's volleyball squad took down Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) opponents, Randolph-Macon, in a five-set thriller at The Golden Dome on Friday night, 3-2 (25-22, 25-22, 25-16, 32-30, 15-9).

Andrew Zaleck once again paved the way for the Scarlet Raiders with a match-high 27 kills on .353 hitting. Daniel Quay recorded six kills but made his presence known at the net with 9 block assists. Justin Tuohy settled into the match and tallied 9 kills, good for second-best on the squad. Derek Au provided a master class in passing and tallied 44 assists while Matt Nikishin and Josh Ledesma picked up 14 and 12 digs, respectively.

The Scarlet Raiders pounded the floor with 16 kills in the opening set, however, they would go on to fall 25-22 as Randolph-Macon hit their highest marker in the match at .429. Rutgers-Newark tied the set up late at 18 but was unable to get over the bump as a kill followed by an error would close out the set in favor of the Yellow Jackets.

In the second set, the Scarlet Raiders led wire-to-wire after using a 4-0 run capped by a Quay service ace. With a four-point lead, Rutgers-Newark continued to build upon their lead to even the match at one.

Randolph-Macon got revenge in the third set with a score of 25-16, the biggest win in the match. The Scarlet Raiders trailed 16-13 and that is where their offense slowed as Randolph-Macon used a 9-3 run to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

The 4th set went above the 25-point threshold with both teams clawing for a win. Rutgers-Newark led by as much as three, 17-14, before Randolph-Macon responded with a 7-1 run. Zaleck made sure the Scarlet Raiders wouldn't go down without a fight as he secured two kills to knot the set up at 21. Later in the set, a service error put the Yellow Jackets in the pole position but once again Zaleck was up for the task as he closed out the set with three straight kills to set it to a deciding 5th set.

In the 5th set, Zaleck and Quay built a brick wall and tallied five blocks within the first 9 points which put the Scarlet Raiders up 9-2. Randolph-Macon made their adjustments allowing them to inch their way back into the set, however, attacking errors would send them home without a win.
