#15 Men's Volleyball Sweeps Eastern Mennonite in CVC Play

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark men's volleyball squad picked up their 4th consecutive win this afternoon with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-20) sweep of Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) opponents, Eastern Mennonite.

As a team, the Scarlet Raiders hit .357 and held the Royals to .105. Andrew Zaleck hit .448 for the match and tallied a team-high 16 kills while Justin Tuohy added 12 with a .346 hit percentage. Matt Nikishin once again kept rallies alive with 11 digs and Derek Au paced the team with 37 assists.

In the opening set, the Scarlet Raiders ripped off five straight points after opening with a service error. The Royals climbed back into the set and trailed by one via a 4-0 run, however, three kills by Rutgers-Newark extended their lead. Eastern Mennonite wouldn't go away quietly and cut the lead down to two before a pair of kills by Zaleck pushed the set out of reach. Martin Chromulak gave the Scarlet Raiders the win with a service ace.

Rutgers-Newark had their best hitting performance of the match in the second set, as they hit .440 as a team. After back-and-forth play early on, the Scarlet Raiders dug their feet in and took control of the set. Daniel Quay powered an attack down to the hardwood which spurred the Scarlet Raiders to go on a 5-0 run, stretching their lead out to 21-11. A pair of errors by Eastern Mennonite aided the Scarlet Raiders as they went up 2-0 in the match.

The Royals came out strong in the 3rd set and took a 4-1 lead before the Scarlet Raiders responded with an 8-1 run that was capped by a Jasjeet Singh service ace. Eastern Mennonite did close the gap but Quay secured two kills to keep EMU from getting over the bump. Holding just a one-point lead, the Scarlet Raiders used another 5-0 run to close out the game and complete the sweep.
