THREE-PEAT! #15 Men's Volleyball Rallies to Take Down Kean, 3-2, to be Crowned NJAC Champs

UNION, NJ | For the 3rd year in a row, the Rutgers University-Newark men's volleyball squad were crowned New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Champions. #15 Rutgers-Newark improved to 10-5, 3-1 with the five-set thrilling win, 3-2 (25-19, 25-20, 26-24, 25-232, 15-10) while Kean dropped to 11-9, 2-2.

Leading the champions was Andrew Zaleck who finished with a match-high 18 kills while Daniel Quay hit a red-hot .414 with 16 kills. Derek Au finished the match with 45 assists and Justin Tuohy tallied seven kills and paced the team with 12 digs.

The Scarlet Raiders got off to a rocky start against the Cougars, hitting -.032 and .097 in the opening two sets which set them back 2-0 in the match. The flipping point in the match came during the third set where the Quay's service ace hit the net and landed in play to give the Scarlet Raiders a 24-23 lead.

After stealing the 3rd set, the Scarlet Raiders found their groove and hit .314 in the 4th set, tallying a match-high 18 kills in the process. Rutgers-Newark fell behind 5-1 to open the 4th set, but used an 8-2 run down the stretch to jump in front 19-18 behind an ace from Martin Chromulak. Rutgers-Newark pushed their lead out to 22-19, however, Kean answered with a 3-0 run to knot it up before Zaleck tallied a pair of kills to give Rutgers-Newark set point. Kean would come within one, but Quay slammed one down to the hardwood to even the match at two.

In the 5th set, the Scarlet Raiders continued to improve and hit .500 as a squad. Tied at four, the Scarlet Raiders used a 5-0 run to take the lead and never look back as they were crowned champs for the third year in a row.
