Rutgers-Newark Men's Volleyball Advances to CVC Semifinal Behind Chromulak's Career-High

ASHLAND, VA | #14 Rutgers University-Newark men's volleyball team advanced to the Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) Semifinal behind a career-high 19 kills from Martin Chromulak. The Scarlet Raiders took down Randolph-Macon, 3-1 (25-22, 25-19, 25-23, 25-22). With the win, the Scarlet Raiders will now take on #7 Southern Virginia in the CVC Semifinal on Friday, April 14 at 5:00 pm.

Chromulak's 19 kills came on .387 hitting while Justin Tuohy and Daniel Quay added 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Derek Au passed the ball with ease and picked up 44 assists and Matt Nikishin paved the way with 9 digs.

The Scarlet Raiders quickly fell behind in the opening set, 5-3, however, they responded with an 8-1 run to propel themselves into the lead. A 5-1 run by Randolph-Macon brought them within two of the Scarlet Raiders but Tuohy recorded a pair of kills to keep the Scarlet Raiders in front. Chromulak remained in form down the stretch and pushed the Scarlet Raiders to a 1-0 lead in the match.

Randolph-Macon found their stride in the second set and led wire-to-wire despite a 4-0 run by the Scarlet Raiders. With the match tied at one, the Scarlet Raiders and the Yellowjackets battled it out in the third set. Randolph-Macon took a 22-21 lead behind an attacking error by the Scarlet Raiders but Chromulak would regain some of the first set magic and push Rutgers-Newark to the win.

The fourth and final set mirrored the third set in which it was back-and-forth action until the Yellowjackets jumped ahead by one late. Josh Ledesma and Quay put Rutgers-Newark up 22-20 before an eventual blocking error punched the Scarlet Raiders' ticket to the semifinal.
