Alvarez & Cortez Homer as RUN Baseball Falls to William Paterson

WAYNE, NJ | The Scarlet Raiders baseball squad dropped a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) bout to William Paterson University, 19-7. The loss moved the Scarlet Raiders to 19-8, 3-4 while the Pioneers improved to 16-9, 4-3. 

Gilroy Prial finished 2-for-3 with an RBI while Michael Weinbel recorded a pair of hits with 2 RBIs. Armando Alvarez paced all Scarlet Raiders with a trio of hits and an RBI. Daniel Reardon (3-1( suffered his first loss of the season after he allowed seven earned runs on eight hits. 

William Paterson quickly took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st before exploding for seven runs in the bottom of the 2nd. Steven Yelin hit a grand slam which ignited the Pioneers' explosive inning. Rutgers-Newark tallied two runs spread across the 2nd and 3rd innings behind RBIs from Ricky Gonzalez and Paul Recchia.

Rutgers-Newark got its offense going in the 6th, plating three runs to cut into William Paterson's lead. Alvarez got the inning started with a solo homer before Prial and Weinbel each recorded RBI triples. The Pioneers, however, returned to their early game form and scored 9 more runs over two innings to extend their lead as they would hold the Scarlet Raiders to just two more runs. Scoring one of the two runs was Peter Cortez who pinch hit in the top of the 9th and hammered one over the right field wall for his first career home run.
