Baseball Unable to Keep Pace With William Paterson, 21-7

NEWARK, NJ | The Scarlet Raiders suffered their second loss to William Paterson this season, 21-7, to fall to 19-9, 3-5 while the Pioneers improved to 17-9, 5-3. 

The Scarlet Raiders scattered 10 hits and tallied seven runs while committing a pair of errors. As a team, William Paterson scored 21 runs on 16 hits with just one error. Peter Cortez led the Scarlet Raiders with a pair of hits while Michael Weinbel paced the team with 3 RBIs. Marcus James (2-2) hurled five innings and allowed seven earned runs on 9 hits with a pair of strikeouts. 

William Paterson picked up where they left off yesterday and tallied two runs to open the game. The Pioneers built their lead up to seven before the Scarlet Raiders got its offense going. Gio Gonzalez scored Cortez who singled through the right side earlier in the inning before Jesse Evensen brought in another run. Rutgers-Newark's offense kept pace, scoring three more runs in the 5th behind a bases clearing double from Weinbel. 

Down by three, the Scarlet Raiders looked to be making a comeback in the game until the Pioneers exploded for seven runs in the top of the 6th led by a grand slam from Steve Yelin. William Paterson continued their torrid scoring in the 7th, plating six more runs. 

Rutgers-Newark went on to score two runs in the bottom of the 8th but were held scoreless in the 9th.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Saturday, April 15 when they host Kean University at 10:00 am.
