Rutgers-Newark Baseball Halted by Thunderstorms Against Kean

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark baseball squad lost the opening game to Kean University this afternoon, 8-0, before tying game two due to thunderstorms. The Scarlet Raiders moved to 19-10-1, 3-6-1 while Kean improved to 19-11-1, 8-1-1.

Game 1: Kean 8, Rutgers-Newark 0

The Scarlet Raiders were held to four hits in the opening game scattered across four batters. Colin Thomson (3-3) pitched six innings and allowed seven earned runs with three strikeouts. Tallying the hits for the Scarlet Raiders were Gilroy Prial, Matthew Rypkema, Eric Recchia and Armando Alvarez.

The Cougars used a three-run blast from Phil Marcantonio to quickly jump out to a 3-0 lead over the Scarlet Raiders. Collin Kiernan (4-4) did well to keep the Scarlet Raiders at bay as they were unable to cross any runs in his complete game shutout.

After three innings without a run, the Cougars plated five runs over the 5th, 6th and 7th innings to extend their lead to 8-0 over the Scarlet Raiders, a lead they would hold until the end of the game.

Game 2: Rutgers-Newark 5, Kean 5

The Scarlet Raiders tallied six hits and scored five runs in the 5-5 tie against Kean. The game had an earlier lightning delay before another lightning delay eventually called the game in the top of the 10th. Daniel Reardon, Rypkema, Recchia, Michael Weinbel, Peter Cortez and Aidan Sheehan all tallied a hit for the Scarlet Raiders.

Kean used a sacrifice fly to record their first run of the game before the Scarlet Raiders took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the 1st. Weinbel grounded into a double play but allowed Gilroy Prial to score before Reardon, in his first-ever collegiate at-bat, recorded an RBI single through the right side to put the Scarlet Raiders in the driver's seat.

The Cougars briefly took the lead in the top of the 3rd, plating two runs, however the Scarlet Raiders kept their bats going as they scored two more runs to regain the lead. Ricky Gonzalez and Prial both walked in a run after bases were loaded. Rutgers-Newark added another to their tally in the bottom of the 5th when Eric Recchia hammered a ball into left field for an RBI double.

In the 7th, Kean used an RBI single to cut the lead down to one before Marano hit a solo shot over the left field wall in the top of the 9th to tie the game and send it into extra innings.
